Potato as a Meat Substitute

Potato is a good and nutritious meat substitute. It's got protein, potassium and B vitamins. It's also very versatile and can be a really delicious meat substitute.

What are your favorite potato meat substitute recipes?

Maybe potatoes can be a meat substitute for some but I think that we are more likely to get protein from eggs, tofu, whole grains, quorn etc.. I believe that potatoes are more on starch though than protein but it's a delish when baked and seasoned with basil, pepper and dip it in a cheesy dip.

From what I know, potato is a root crop which is a good source of carbohydrates and not exactly a meat substitute for our protein needs. Beans and nuts are better meat substitutes. However, there is not limit in the kind of food and the amount that we eat so maybe there is no more point in being too choosy with our food. I am to go into full OMAD soon when I am able to skip breakfast. With the food that I eat, I can say that this diet is good for me.

I haven't heard of potatoes served as a meat substitute but we use it as a meat extender. We season ground pork and then we add potatoes and carrots as extenders so that it's not all meat before we fry it.

Personally, I don't like meat - red meat specifically. I can't remember the last time I ate any red meat. It's either chicken or fish for me.

But when I want a completely different substitute for meat or fish, it would be plantain for me.

That is true potatoes can be a substitute for meat, we are eating smashed boiled potatoes with carrots and onion, sometimes we bake potatoes on a grill and eat them with garlic.

From what I know potato has carbohydrates same as rice. It is better to use tofu as meat. You can cook tofu easily. Many gym goer prefer tofu as part of their diet. What exactly I know is the sweet potato. They use this as rice substitute. It has a good source of carbohydrates that is good in our body.

I agree. I don't see how potatoe can be a meat substitute. Potatoes is very high in carbs. You can't even have it on low carb diets. It can never substitute meat. I'll bet you after you have it, you will be hungry in minimum 2 hours. That's why you are always told to have a protein with every meal because this tends to keep you full for longer. Having eaten the low carb way I highly recommend this way of eating. That's why so many loose weight on it.

Since this thread is about OMAD for vegans, a potato would be an acceptable food during the eating window, although it is generally not considered to have enough protein to be an actual meat substitute .
Discussing potatoes as a meat-extender has no relevance for a person that doesn’t eat meat, although it can be used along with beans, or other legumes (which are a meat substitute), as part of the meal.
Because potatoes are mostly starch, they will definitely be spiking insulin, and this should also be a consideration for the amount you consume.

I don't eat meat but I also don't really like potatoes. I know potatoes have high carbs on it. I don't think it's a good source of protien because it is a root crops. Anyway, potatoes are too blunt for me. I just eat when my Mom cook it with some herbs that I don't also know.

Potatoes only have about over 2 grams of protein per piece but it can be used alongside beans to create Potato Bean balls or Burgers. Just mash boiled potatoes and cook white or kidney beans, mix in some, grated carrots and onion, eggs, flour, and seasoning. Make into patties and quote in Japanese Breadcrumbs. Deep fry and drain. Goes well with teriyaki sauce or sweet and sour.

I'm OK with eating potatoes. Never thought of it as a meat substitute. I don't eat potatoes a lot because it feels way too heavy in my stomach. I love all kinds of root vegetables. When cooking potatoes, especially mashed potatoes, it good to blend in another root veggie like carrots or turnips.

I have used similar ingredients to make black bean or red bean burgers. I like the flavor of the red beans (dark kidney beans) better than I do the black beans , and I used almond flour instead of regular flour. After I made the mix, I formed them into hamburger patties and then froze them; so all I had to do was get one out of the freezer when I wanted a veggie burger. It is much healthier than the processed ones they sell, and far less expensive, too.
These would be fine on a plant-based OMAD diet, and they make a really flavorful burger once you add the condiments, lettuce, tomato, onions, and dill pickles. I didn’t deep fry mine, I just cooked it in a little coconut oil in the skillet on the stove .

I love red and white kidney beans, I use white for desserts and the red ones as an extender or substitute for meat. I once made Felafel using red beans instead of chickpeas and it taste better.

This is my first time I heard that potatoes can be a substitute of meat. For me I think the best substitute for meat are eggs, fish, tofu and vegan meat. What I like about tofu is that it has eight essential amino acid and it contains protein, calcium, iron and others. I have tried the vegan meat, well it tastes like meat and vegetable but to compare it with tofu, I will choose tofu as substitute to meat.

i also have the same.thoughts. like potato for me cannot sufficiently suffice as a replacement for meat since there are no proteins to gain from its consumption. Here in my place we have something called soymeat which is the perfect option.
