Becoming Fat Adapted.

When we first start with eating a ketogenic diet, our body has to learn how to change over from burning carbs into burning fat. This process can take up to a month to happen, depending on each person.
So, even though we are only eating one meal a day with OMAD, and we are burning fat as fuel because we are also eating low carb foods, it still takes a while for our body to recognize fat as our PREFERRED fuel.
The good news here, is that, once we are fat adapted, our body will preferentially burn fat, and can easily change back and forth, depending on what we have eaten.

There are several ways that you can tell when your body has become fully fat-adapted, and one of the easiest ones would be that when we are hungry, we automatically think about eating a low carb food, such as bacon and eggs, as opposed to a bowl of cereal , for breakfast.

Here is a short video that explains about being fat-adapted, and gives you the indications to look for so you can tell when you have actually achieved the fat-adapted state.

It's a good thing to know that I can actually become fat adapted. I am, however, interested in learning how psychology plays a part in the adaptation process. To me, it sounds like it has a lot to do with behavioral learning. Even so, there should be at least definite studies to back these evaluations up. Please also expound on developing adaptation to other nutrients other than just fat. I saw someone ask about eating meat for weeks while on OMAD. I would like to hear what you have to say about this. Thank you.

It really is not something that we can control with our mind, @Cyrus_W . What it means to be fat-adapted, is that our body has learned to burn fat ketones as the preferred fuel , rather than burning sugar.
Since most people have been raised on a diet with a lot of carbs, and often enough meals to refuel our body, what the body burns by preference would be sugar.
When you start eating low carb meals, so that we are not spiking insulin each time we eat, then our insulin resistance goes down, and our food cravings go away.
Once there is no sugar to burn as fuel, then our body simply switches over to burning fat. It has nothing to do with any decision we make, it is just how the human body is designed.

In terms of becoming fat adapted, there isn’t any sort of psychology behind it, as it is an entirely physiological process. When your body finds that it’s not getting any carbohydrates for fuel, it starts turning to fat as its primary fuel source.

It can take anywhere between three days to a month depending on the individual. Doing a 72 hour fast can actually help you get into ketosis much quicker than just switching to low carb.

In any case, in terms of psychology, studies have shown that the brain actually works much more efficiently when using ketones for fuel, which can actually result in improved mental clarity and cognitive performance. There is a reason why ketogenic diets are recommended for people with epilepsy; ketones are good for the brain.

Are there any kind of side effects of the ody burning fat instead of carbs? For the longest time my body has been burning the carbs, I am sure of this because my carb intake is ver high. If fat is burned instead, would there be effects because of that change?

You might feel healthier through a couple of different ways: have a better mood, be able to go to sleep easier, have more energy, and all around just feel better as your body will be functioning in a better manner. It will really depend on you though, so make sure when beginning your diet to pay attention to how you feel and see if there are any noticable changes. Each person's body is different so burning fat instead of carbs may affect you in a different way.
